DEV SAT ON THE DECK of the boat, his legs hanging over the side. He took a slow sip of his beer and looked over at Carrie. She lay on the foredeck, protected from the sun by the canopy he’d draped from the mast to the bow rail. Her eyes were closed, and he suspected she was asleep.

She’d swum for nearly an hour, and by the time they had finished he’d turned her into a passable swimmer. It was nice to have something to offer a woman. Jillian had been so independent. She made her own money, her own decisions. Even when he had offered advice or an opinion, he got the distinct impression that Jillian wasn’t really listening.

But the simple act of teaching Carrie to swim had brought him undeniable pleasure. She enjoyed little things—a shell he retrieved from the beach that she still held clutched in her hand, a drink he’d brought her when they came back on board, the canopy he’d put up to protect her delicate skin from the tropical sun. Any act of kindness was met with a sweet smile.

Dev’s gaze drifted down from her mouth along the length of her body. She hadn’t bothered to change out of her nightgown. Perhaps she might have, had she realized that it became nearly transparent when wet. The damp fabric still clung to her skin, outlining the perfect curves of her breasts, revealing the dusty-rose color of her nipples and the shadow of the panties she wore.

He drew a deep breath, then let it out slowly. A friendship with Carrie Reynolds had seemed like a practical goal for his vacation. But from the moment he’d made the suggestion, Dev had found good cause to question his sanity. How the hell was he supposed to keep her at arm’s length when she kept falling into his arms at the slightest cause?

How odd that he found her so captivating. Had anyone told him he’d find himself attracted to such a simple and guileless woman, he might have brushed off the suggestion as absurd. But every time he turned around, she was there, unwittingly testing his resolve, tempting him with her sweet mouth and her lush body.

“Ahoy, there!”

Dev drew his eyes away from Carrie, and turned to see Fergus and Moira approaching the boat in the dinghy. He pressed his index finger to his lips and pointed to Carrie.

Fergus gave him a nod and Moira smiled as they quietly maneuvered the dinghy around to the stern. Fergus killed the outboard, tied up, then hefted a few bags of groceries up to Dev. He helped his wife back on board before nimbly jumping on behind her. “You’ve had a nice mornin’ then?” he asked.

Dev nodded. “Very nice. I did some snorkeling, and Carrie learned to swim.”

A knowing smile curled Moira’s lips. “She did? And would you be her teacher then?”

“Moira McGuire O’Malley!” Fergus cried. “You stop that right now.” He turned to Dev. “My wife fancies herself a bit of a matchmaker.
